Information Details

Tongmu coffin is a coffin made mainly of paulownia wood in traditional funeral supplies, which has certain applications in folk funeral culture. The following will introduce it to you from multiple aspects:

1、 Material characteristics

Lightweight texture: The density of paulownia wood is relatively low, and its weight is relatively light. This characteristic makes it more convenient to transport and lift paulownia coffins, especially in areas with complex terrain, which can reduce the burden of manpower.

Easy to process: The paulownia wood has a soft texture, making it convenient for cutting, carving, polishing, and other processing steps. Craftsmen can carve patterns, auspicious designs, or information related to the deceased on the surface of the coffin according to their needs, giving the coffin more commemorative meaning and artistic sense.

Natural characteristics: Tongmu belongs to natural wood and has a certain texture. Although it is not as luxurious as some precious woods, it presents a simple and natural style, which meets the aesthetic needs of some people for traditional funeral supplies.

2、 Production process

Material selection and cutting: Select paulownia wood boards that are free from insect damage, cracking, and have relatively neat textures. Cut them according to the size requirements of the coffin to ensure that the size and thickness of the boards meet the standards.

Splicing combination: The cut boards are spliced together using traditional mortise and tenon structures or modern connection methods to form the main frame of the coffin, including the coffin lid, coffin body, coffin bottom, and other parts, ensuring the stability of the structure.

Carving decoration: Carving decoration is applied to the surface of the coffin according to the needs of the funeral family and local funeral customs. Common carved patterns include flowers and birds, mountains and waters, auspicious patterns (such as bats symbolizing good fortune, peonies symbolizing wealth, etc.), and some may also carve the life information or prayer statements of the deceased.

Polishing and Painting: Fine polish the surface of the coffin to make it smooth and free of burrs, and then apply paint. Painting can not only enhance the aesthetics of coffins, but also serve as moisture and insect proof measures, extending the shelf life of coffins. Traditionally, tung oil or varnish is commonly used, but nowadays environmentally friendly coatings are also chosen.
